Case Study: Trinity College

Unlocking Live Occupancy Insights for Smarter Campuses

To support decisions regarding the potential relocation of academic programming and administrative functions from Foster Place at Trinity College Dublin, HH Angus deployed ARMS using minimally invasive thermal occupancy sensors integrated with scheduling, attendance, existing occupancy IoT, and access control data sources. The solution provided Trinity College Dublin with reliable, privacy-focused utilization analytics and a centralized operational view of how spaces were actually being used, enabling more informed campus planning decisions while demonstrating the scalability and flexibility of ARMS for complex higher education environments.

The Challenge

Trinity College Dublin required reliable occupancy and utilization data to determine whether academic programming and administrative functions housed within Foster Place could be relocated to other campus spaces.

The University needed better visibility into:

  • Actual office and classroom occupancy
  • Shared space utilization
  • Differences between scheduled and real-world usage
  • Daily and weekly occupancy trends

Because Foster Place is a heritage building, the solution also demanded minimal infrastructure modifications and minimal disruption to occupants.

The Solution

HH Angus deployed the Angus Remote Management System (ARMS) using privacy-focused occupancy sensing technology.

The deployment included:

  • AI-enabled thermal occupancy sensors requiring minimal infrastructure
  • Integration with existing occupancy IoT devices
  • Integration with classroom scheduling data
  • Integration with office attendance schedules
  • Integration with access control data from Trinity’s Stack building
  • Interactive dashboards and visualization tools powered by AWS QuickSight

Sensors were installed throughout Foster Place to monitor occupancy and utilization patterns without collecting images, audio, or personally identifiable information.

ARMS aggregated occupancy, scheduling, attendance, and access control data into a centralized analytics platform providing both real-time visibility and historical utilization trends.

The solution was specifically selected for its ability to operate effectively within a heritage environment while maintaining occupant privacy and minimizing infrastructure impact.

The Results

The deployment provided Trinity College Dublin with a significantly improved understanding of how Foster Place was being used.

Teams gained:

Accurate Utilization Insights - Reliable occupancy data for Foster Place.

Scheduled vs. Actual Usage Visibility - The ability to compare programmed space allocations against real-world occupancy patterns.

Integrated Operational Analytics - A unified view of occupancy, scheduling, and access control data.

Minimal Infrastructure Impact - Successful deployment within a heritage building without major infrastructure modifications.
